1) Download a map on your smartphone at home
It´s a great idea to download a map of Barcelona in advance if you have a smartphone. You’ll always have a map with you and from the start you´ll be able to pin useful locations such as your hotel. You´ll also avoid searching for WiFi all the time and save lots of battery on your smartphone. Having the maps always with you, allows you to walk around in Barcelona´s small and cosy streets without feeling lost. Pin down your hotel and some attractions you´ll definitely want to see. You´ll notice, it works exactly like a traditional map, but it´s simply more convenient!

2) Decide which wheelchair you´ll take
If you fly to Barcelona by wheelchair, taking your manual wheelchair is definitely easier than your electric wheelchair because of the flight. But if you can´t leave your electric wheelchair at home, that doesn’t have to be a problem. In Barcelona, you can also rent material such as a hoist, electric wheelchair, shower chair or scooter. Definitely inform your airline or tour operator about which wheelchair you will take, and communicate clearly the dimensions and type of battery.
3) Book an airport transfer
Once you have arrived in the airport in your wheelchair and collected your bags, you don´t want to waste much more time in the airport. The flight is often tiring and you would like to get to the city center or your hotel quickly. You have a few options to quickly get to Barcelona by wheelchair from the airport. It´s best that make you choice in advance, it simply avoids losing time.
- The Aerobus: A smooth shuttle bus that brings you to the center of the city. This bus runs from Barcelona El Prat Terminal1 and Terminal2. All buses are accessible for wheelchair users. A single ticket costs about € 6. The bus stop is well indicated by icons at the airport. The buses often drive out so you never have to wait a long time to catch one. It takes about 35 minutes to reach the city center. From there, you can take another bus or metro to your hotel by wheelchair.
- The accessible Subway Line 9 runs from Terminal1 and Terminal2. This metro line is not the greatest connection to the city in our opinion. Chances are high that you will have also to switch to reach your final destination. The travel time will take at least 45 and easily 60 minutes. The price for a ticket is € 4.5. A T-10 ticket is not valid for those traveling to and from the airport.
- Book a private transfer. This is the most comfortable option. The driver will then wait for you in the arrival hall, have your name and phone number and vice versa. - The local taxi company Taxi Amic is a specialist in disabled taxi services in Barcelona. How does it work? Once you´ve landed, you call them to pick you up at the airport. Please be aware: Only when you have collected your bags you can ask them to send the accessible taxi to the airport. The taxi driver will then drive from Barcelona to the airport. 4) Take the bus or tram
In Barcelona, you can easily use public transport as a disabled traveler. Buses and trams in Barcelona are 100% accessible for wheelchair users. They are equipped with ramps and extensions that allow you to move easily and easily within the city. Most metro stops are accessible in Barcelona but some stops do not have a lift yet. These are the 15 metro stops where there is no elevator until today.

5) Buy a T-10 ticket
You use one single ticket with the whole family (T-10) and have access to all public transport i Barcelona by wheelchair.: trams, buses and metro. It costs about 10 EUR and gives you 10 trips in and around Barcelona. There is no better formula than the T-10 when you are on a city-trip.
6) Sagrada Familia? Buy your ticket in advance.
Go and admire this masterpiece, it is perfectly doable in a city as Barcelona by wheelchair. The interior of the Sagrada Familia is truly breathtaking. The temple is accessible by wheelchair. Buy your tickets upfront for you and your family or friends so you don´t waste time there. The audio guide certainly adds value to your visit.
